Imati ili biti?
The book is one of the capital works of the second half of the twentieth century. According to Fromm, it continues two tendencies of his previous works - the analysis of selfishness and altruism as two fundamental character orientations.
Fromm, a well-known critic of social and psychological movements of the last century, analyzes two basic ways of existence of a human being - "having" and "being". In the first chapter, he talks about the difference between these two ways of being, in the second, he shows the difference from examples in everyday life, in the third, he presents the views on having and being in the Old and New Testaments, as well as Meister Eckhart, while in the fourth, he gives an analysis of the difference between having and being , in which he presents theoretical conclusions based on empirical data. In the final chapter, the author warns of the importance of these modes of existence for the formation of a new man and a new society, and the examination of possibilities that would weaken individual difficulties and socio-economic movements towards disaster.
