The novel "The Glass Bead Game", published in 1943, is Hermann Hesse's greatest, almost life-long work, which he wrote for almost 12 years.

It is considered that Hesse deserved the Nobel Prize, which was awarded to him in 1946, mainly because of him. The novel takes place in the future, possibly in the 25th century, in the fictional country of Castalia. That country is governed by an intellectual elite, also placed at the head of the education system. Gifted students are taught in schools, and the very access to education, which belongs only to the most gifted, is considered an honor. If someone fails to finish school, he is ostracized from society. Arts and humanities are mostly taught in schools, and next to them, the most important part of education is the Glass Pearl Game.
