Knjiga o Hrabalu

Knjiga o Hrabalu

Péter Esterházy

The central character of this novel is Anna, a woman with three children and a writer husband, obsessively preoccupied with writing a book about the Czech storyteller Bohumil Hrabal.

Anna loves to sing and whistle the blues, and her intimate story - the confession of a woman who carries the burden of the entire household on her back, but also of history, which her husband carries as a burden - is also the story of other women whose fate is directly or indirectly connected to hers (her mother-in-law and mother, Hrabal's mother). With a touch of irony, the author outlines various aspects of life under communism, and the dilemmas faced by an intellectual under that regime.
