Die Hauptfigur dieses Romans ist Anna, eine Frau mit drei Kindern und Ehemann als Schriftstellerin, die davon besessen ist, ein Buch über den tschechischen Geschichtenerzähler Bohumil Hrabal zu schreiben.

Anna singt und pfeift gerne den Blues, und ihre intime Geschichte – das Geständnis einer Frau, die die Last des gesamten Haushalts auf ihrem Rücken trägt, aber auch die Geschichte, die ihr Mann als Ermutigung trägt – ist auch die Geschichte anderer Frauen, deren Schicksal direkt oder indirekt mit ihrem Schicksal verbunden ist (ihrer Schwiegermutter und Mutter, Hrabals Mutter). Mit milder Ironie skizziert der Autor verschiedene Aspekte des Lebens im Kommunismus und die Dilemmata, mit denen ein Intellektueller in diesem Regime konfrontiert war.
