Vitez slavonske ravni

Vitez slavonske ravni

Marija Jurić Zagorka

The knight, known for his masks and pyrotechnic tricks with which he scares off bandits, becomes a legend, nicknamed "the elf" for his speed and mystery.

“The Knight of the Slavonian Plain”, a novel about a mysterious hero fighting bandits who ravage Slavonia, is also interesting because it is the only novel by Zagorka that was not set in Zagreb. Zagorka allegedly had a lot of trouble deciding which historical events to use as the basis for her Slavonian novel because, as she noted, “Slavonia is not only fertile with natural fruits but also with rich material for novels”. The novel, by the way, takes place during the reign of Maria Theresa and is based on real historical events.
