Andrea Camilleri

Spider's Patience (2004) is part of the series about Inspector Salvo Montalban. Set in the fictional Sicilian town of Vigàtu, the novel combines criminal suspense with the psychological depth, humor and social commentary characteristic of Camilleri's styl

The story begins when Montalbano, recovering from an injury from a previous case, receives a call about the kidnapping of young Susanna Mistretta, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. The kidnapping seems unusual because the family has not received a ransom demand, and Susanna's father, the geologist Mistretta, is facing financial difficulties. Montalbano, although physically limited, begins the investigation, relying on intuition and his team, including his loyal colleague Mimì Augello and the eccentric Catarelli.

Through his investigation, Montalbano uncovers complex family relationships, hidden secrets, and connections to the mafia. Susanna's kidnapping turns out to be part of an intricate plan involving financial fraud and personal vendettas. Montalbano, watching the case like a spider waiting patiently in its web, connects seemingly unrelated clues, including strange phone calls and suspicious behavior by family members. His persistence uncovers the truth behind the kidnapping, revealing that the motive is not just money, but also deep-seated emotions.

The novel explores themes of corruption, power and human fragility, with Camilleri's signature portrayal of Sicilian culture, food and dialect. Montalban's sarcastic humour and moral dilemma make him a compelling protagonist in the fight against injustice.
