The Path to Balkania (2001) by Zoran Vukman is a collection of columns published in Slobodna Dalmacija and Hrvatski slov. The book brings sharp socio-political and cultural commentary on the situation in Croatia and the region at the turn of the millennium, reflecting on identity, history and the challenges of transition. Vukman, a philosopher, journalist and essayist, uses a satirical and analytical approach, dissecting Balkan stereotypes, political corruption and social stagnation.

Through the columns, the author explores Croatia's path towards European integration, but also the dangers of "Balkanization" - a return to the chaotic patterns of the past. He criticizes political elites, bureaucracy and lack of vision, while at the same time questioning the spiritual and moral crisis of society. Vukman's style is provocative, often ironic, but always deeply reflective, inviting readers to reconsider their own views. The book is a kind of kaleidoscope of Croatian reality in the 1990s and early 2000s, marked by the war legacy, transition and the struggle for identity.

The title A Journey to the Balkans symbolizes duality: the possibility of progress, but also the risk of stagnation in Balkan stereotypes. Vukman emphasizes the need for spiritual and intellectual renewal if Croatia is to escape the pitfalls of the past. The collection has been noted for its topicality and sharpness, resonating with readers who recognize the complexity of Croatian society.
