Crna dalija (1987) Džejmsa Elroja je kriminalistički roman inspirisan stvarnim, nerešenim ubistvom Elizabet Šort 1947. godine u Los Anđelesu. Delo je prvo u Elrojevom L.A. kvartetu, poznatom po inspirativnom prikazu grada i složenim zapletama.

Radnja prati dva policajca, Bakija Blajherta i Lija Blančarda, bivše boksere i prijatelje, koji istražuju jezivo ubistvo mlade žene, nazvane Crna Dalija zbog svog stila i medijske senzacije. Telo je pronađeno raskomadano i osakaćeno, što pokreće masovnu potragu za ubicom.

Baki i Li, zaljubljeni u istu ženu, Kej Lejk, postaju opsednuti slučajem. Istraga ih vodi kroz mračnu stranu Holivuda, otkrivajući korupciju u policiji, prostituciju i skrivene veze. Baki upoznaje Madlen Sprejg, devojku sličnu Elizabet, što dodatno komplikuje njegov lični život i istragu. Lijevo ponašanje postaje sve nestabilnije, a otkrića o njegovoj prošlosti i vezama sa kriminalcima produbljuju dramu.

Roman istražuje teme opsesije, moralnih dilema i korupcije u posleratnom Los Anđelesu. Elroj meša činjenice sa fikcijom, nudeći rešenje za ubistvo koje zapravo nije rešeno. Kroz intenzivan stil i složene likove, prikazuje mračnu stranu američkog sna.
