Barunica

Barunica

Veljko Kovačević

The main character is Baroness Amalia von Ledenyi, a Hungarian noblewoman married to an Austrian baron, who finds herself in a conflict between loyalty to the empire and sympathy for the Hungarian revolutionaries.

Amalija, as an intellectual and rebel, participates in secret meetings, spy games and rebellions against the Habsburgs. The novel follows her inner struggle: between a privileged life in the castles of Vienna and Zagreb, her love for Ivan and the danger of betrayal. Amidst political turmoil – the revolution of 1848, the struggle of the Croats for autonomy and the Hungarian uprisings – a love triangle, assassination and escape occur.
