Solo

Rana Dasgupta

It is a novel about Ulrich, a centenarian from Bulgaria, his life and fantasies.

Before he lost his sight, Ulrich read a story in a magazine about how a group of explorers came across a community of parrots who spoke the language of a society wiped out by a recent disaster. Amazed by this discovery, the parrots are put in cages and sent home for linguists to record the remains of this lost language. However, already frightened by the destruction they recently witnessed, the parrots die during transport. Wondering if he, unlike those helpless parrots, can leave the world with any wisdom, Ulrich in his armchair begins an epic journey through the twists and turns of his country's turbulent history in the last century - as well as a journey through his own lifetime, marked by lost love and failure in chemistry.
