Zaplet počinje kada Calloway otkriva da je njegov prijatelj pod sumnjivim okolnostima stradao u prometnoj nesreći prije njegovog dolaska.

Pod naslovom 'Treći čovjek' poznajemo engleski film noir iz 1949. i roman Grahama Greena. Kada mu je došla zamolba da napiše scenarij za film Carola Reeda koji bi govorio o stanju u Beču poslije Drugog svjetskoga rata, Greene je odlučio prvo napisati roman kako bi iz njega poslije izvukao materijal za scenarij. Iako je roman trebao poslužiti tek za razradbu atmosfere priče i karaktera likova, te nije bio namijenjen javnosti, ipak je objavljen 1950. godine. Narator priče je engleski policajac, Rollo Calloway, koji dolazi u poslijeratni Beč na poziv svog prijatelja Harrya Limea, koji mu ondje nudi posao.
