Der Roman verwebt die Gegenwart (die Hochzeit selbst, die langsam außer Kontrolle gerät) mit der Vergangenheit und enthüllt die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen vier Hauptfiguren, die abwechselnd erzählen: Emily, ihre Mutter Annika, ihr Bruder und vielleicht noch jemand aus ihrem engsten Umfeld. Familiengeheimnisse, alte Grollgefühle, Liebesdreiecke und unausgesprochene Traumata kommen ans Licht, gerade als alles perfekt sein sollte.

Die Hochzeit gerät zum Chaos – nicht nur wegen des Regens oder Annikas Wutausbrüchen, sondern weil dunkle Geheimnisse ans Licht kommen: Untreue, Manipulationen, langjährige Lügen und Ereignisse, die das Leben aller Anwesenden geprägt haben. Die Spannungen nehmen zu, Beziehungen zerbrechen, und was eigentlich ein „glückliches Ende“ hätte sein sollen, wird zu einem Moment der Wahrheit und der Konfrontation mit der Realität.
