John Galsworthy (1867–1933), englischer Nobelpreisträger (1932) und Autor der berühmten Forsyte-Saga, veröffentlichte 1900 den Roman Villa Rubein. Die Handlung spielt in der malerischen Tiroler Stadt und Villa Rubein, dem Wohnort der englischen Familie Dawney. Der junge Christian Dawney verliebt sich in den talentierten, aber armen und rebellischen Maler Harz österreichisch-deutscher Herkunft. Ihre Liebesgeschichte entfaltet sich in einer Atmosphäre des Konflikts zwischen künstlerischen Idealen und bürgerlicher Sicherheit, Leidenschaft und Konvention, Individualismus und familiären Erwartungen.

Galsworthy hat hier noch nicht die volle Reife der Forsyte-Saga erreicht, doch der Roman zeigt bereits seine zentralen Themen: Klassenunterschiede, Geld versus Kunst, den Generationenkonflikt und den Gegensatz zwischen englischem Pragmatismus und kontinentalem romantischem Temperament. Der Stil ist noch etwas romantisch und lyrisch, mit wunderschönen Beschreibungen der Tiroler Natur.

Obwohl Vila Rubein als frühes und weniger bekanntes Werk Galsworthys gilt, ist es ein äußerst lesenswerter und unterhaltsamer Roman, der die großen Themen seines späteren Schaffens bereits ankündigt. In den 1930er-Jahren erfreute er sich beim kroatischen Literaturpublikum großer Beliebtheit als leichte, aber anspruchsvolle ausländische Unterhaltung. Heute wird er als interessante Einführung in Galsworthys Welt und als subtile Studie über jugendliche Liebe im Angesicht gesellschaftlicher Barrieren gelesen.
