Martin Nedić's "The State of the Order of Bosnia Srebrena" is one of the key works for understanding the history of the Franciscan province of Bosnia Srebrena and its position in the broader social and political context of Ottoman and early modern Bosnia. Nedić, a Franciscan and historian, writes from the inside — as an expert on religious life, but also as a witness to the tensions and changes the province faced.
The book focuses on the organization of the Order, its spiritual and organizational foundations, its governance, relations between monasteries, and the formation of the identity of the Bosnian Franciscans. In addition to analyzing internal issues — religious discipline, education, relations between provincials and monasteries — the author also deals with the broader social circumstances that influenced the life of the community. He pays special attention to relations with the Ottoman authorities, dependence on ahdnams, the legal status of the Franciscans, and their role as mediators between the Christian population and the Muslim administration.
Nedić also describes the various crises that affected the Order: from the decline in the number of monks, through internal conflicts, to the economic and political pressures that intensified towards the end of Ottoman rule. At the same time, he describes the extensive pastoral activity of the Franciscans, their concern for education, literacy, sacred art and the preservation of cultural heritage in communities often left to their own devices.
The work also provides valuable information about everyday life: living conditions in monasteries, the journey of missionaries, relationships with believers and local dignitaries. Nedić's style is documentary, but occasionally polemical, which gives the book a liveliness and personal perspective.
This edition provides the modern reader with an insight into the formative period of the Bosnian Franciscans and their role in preserving cultural and religious identity, making it an indispensable source for historians and researchers of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
