The main character is Hanako, a young Japanese woman who was educated in the United States. After World War II, she returns to the devastated Tokyo, where she tries to find her place between Eastern traditions and Western ways of thinking. In Tokyo, she meets Lyn, an American soldier from the occupation forces. Although they come from opposing worlds, love quickly develops between them. As their relationship develops, both of them face the question of whether love and personal choice can survive in a world full of prejudice and social restrictions. One Marriage is a romance novel that, through the intimate story of two people, depicts the broader problems of cultural differences and prejudice in the post-war world.
