Zdenka Marković

"House in the Sun" by Zdenka Marković is a collection of prose poems and lyrical introspective prose. Melancholic and nostalgic images of childhood, homeland and inner world. One of the most famous works of the Croatian writer and translator.

House in the Sun by Zdenka Marković is a collection of poems in prose and lyrical, introspective prose, which stylistically continues her earlier collection House in the Snow (1922). Zdenka Marković (Požega, 1884 – Zagreb, 1974) was a writer, translator, professor and one of the most prominent Croatian writers of the first half of the 20th century. Her prose is characterized by a melancholic, nostalgic and intimate tone, with a pronounced turn towards the world of childhood, family and homeland (Požega and Slavonia).

In House in the Sun the author depicts the warmth of home, sunny days of childhood, memories of nature and the family circle, but also the transience of time, loneliness and longing. The texts are lyrical, poetically shaped, with richly pictorial language and subtle emotional depth. Critics often point out it as a very intimate and autobiographically colored prose, in which a feeling of gentle melancholy and reminiscence prevails.

Unlike the dramatic or socially engaged literature of the time, Marković withdraws into a personal, inner world, creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation and poetic memory. The collection belongs to the tradition of Croatian women's lyrical prose between the two wars.

Today, this edition is a sought-after antiquarian copy, especially appreciated among lovers of introspective and regionally colored literature. It represents an important part of the oeuvre of Zdenka Marković, who, in addition to her literary work, was also a prolific translator (she translated from Polish, Czech and other Slavic languages) and the author of biographical and memoir works.
