Nisam ja drvo

Nisam ja drvo

The book is a personal story about growing up, identity, and the resistance to being just a "tree" in life - a metaphor for passivity versus the desire to move and find one's own path.

The novel depicts the author's childhood in rural Slavonia (mostly Ilova and Gojlo) in the 1950s through the eyes of a child. The title "I am not a tree" symbolizes the child's desire for movement, life, feelings and individuality - the opposite of the passive "tree" that just stands and suffers. The author takes us back to the carefree time of childhood, but also through family relationships, everyday village life, social circumstances and growing up in the post-war period. The characters bear the names of real people from the author's environment, which gives the book a strong personal and documentary tone. Many of these people were present at the book's promotions.
