Das große Versprechen

Das große Versprechen

Catherine Gaskin

After being rescued as an orphan by a wealthy worker, Lally grows up with his family. Through the hardships of war and the social upheavals of the 20th century, her loyalty and promise are put to the test.

Catherine Gaskin's novel "Promises" (German translation: Das große Versprechen) is a lavish family saga steeped in drama, loyalty, and the struggle for survival in the first half of the 20th century. The story begins in an industrial town in Yorkshire when businessman Black Jack Pollock rescues an abandoned, poor girl, Lally Leeds, and decides to raise her as an equal to his own children.

Growing up on the family estate, Lally develops a deep attachment and sense of gratitude towards her adoptive family. But as the children grow up, the Pollock family is beset by numerous problems and internal conflicts – from unhappy loves, to the devastating consequences of World War I in France, to the social and financial turmoil of the 1920s in America. In the midst of these crises, it is Lally who becomes a pillar of strength who tries to keep the family together, often putting the needs of others and the promises made before her own happiness.

In this work, Gaskin combines historical circumstances with moving human destinies. Through the character of Lally Leeds, the author explores the limits of family loyalty, the price and weight of promises made, and the search for identity of a girl trying to find her place in a world full of social differences.
