Luka ali ne apostol

Luka ali ne apostol

Mirjana Matić Halle

A psychological novel about the fate of a man who, despite his name as Evangelist, remains an ordinary, imperfect man. The author analyzes his inner moral downfalls, illusions, quests, and the tragedy of everyday life.

"Luka, ali ne apostol" (published in 1974 by the Zora/Stvarnost publishing house) is an exceptionally striking psychological and social novel by the prominent Croatian writer and playwright Mirjana Matić-Halle. The title itself establishes a strong ironic and symbolic contrast between a saintly, exalted name and an imperfect, sinful human being who bears that name in the real, cruel world. The novel's plot focuses on a complex analysis of the main character Luka, following his life path, personal crises, moral stumbles, and the compromises he makes under pressure from his environment and his own weaknesses. Unlike his biblical namesake, this Luka is not a leader or a spiritual role model, but a man caught in the gap between his own idealistic aspirations and the banality of everyday life. The author, with exceptional storytelling talent and psychological depth, analyzes the motives of guilt, loneliness, unfulfilled dreams and human alienation in society, showing how an individual fights for his own identity and a piece of inner peace. Written in an extremely layered, analytical and stylistically refined language, this prose brings a dark but extremely convincing picture of human nature. The novel "Luka, ali ne apostol" is considered one of the important achievements of Croatian interwar and post-war women's literature, offering a timeless study of human fragility, failed expectations and the search for meaning.
