Povijest Crvenog križa u Osijeku
The monograph by Dr. Stjepan Sršan details the establishment, development and activities of the Red Cross organization in Osijek, emphasizing its key humanitarian role throughout historical periods.
The monograph History of the Red Cross in Osijek, by the well-known Osijek historian and archivist Dr. Sc. Stjepan Sršan (in an updated edition in collaboration with Marko Đukić), presents a thorough historiographical overview of the origins and centuries-long activities of this humanitarian organization in the city of Osijek and the wider region. Based on rich archival material, original documents, photographs and testimonies, the book systematically follows the development of the Osijek Red Cross from its first beginnings in the 19th century to the present day. The author analyzes in detail key historical moments in which the work of the Red Cross was of crucial importance — such as armed conflicts, the First and Second World Wars, and especially the Homeland War, when the Osijek Red Cross bore the enormous burden of caring for the wounded, refugees and displaced persons. In addition to wartime events, the work also presents continuous peacetime activities: organizing voluntary blood donations, providing first aid, social programs and educating young people. This book is not only a chronicle of an institution, but also a precious testimony to the solidarity, nobility and humanity of the people of Osijek through turbulent historical periods.
