Esej je objavljen kao sastavni dio prvog izdanja Lukacseva najvažnijeg estetičkog spisa, Osobenost estetskog iz 1963. godine.

Prema Lukacsevu mišljenju arhitektura je svjetotvorna umjetnost jedina sposobna izraziti cjelokupni društveni bitak određene epohe, koja nije kadra djelovati kao kritička umjetnost, no koja oblikovanjem svijeta oponaša zakonitosti zbilje u koju je uronjen, a svoj estetski značaj zadobiva tek onda kad zadovolji svoju tehnološku zadaću: “arhitektura postaje umjetnošću tek kada čovjek počne stvarati prostor koji mu doista pripada i kada taj prostor postane elementom njegove proširene osobnosti, njegov vlastiti stvoreni svijet”.
