Shadows in Paradise is a two-part novel by Erich Maria Remarque that poignantly depicts the fate of German emigrants in New York after World War II.
The novel Shadows in Paradise, published posthumously in 1971, is one of the last and most mature works of the famous German writer Erich Maria Remarque. The plot is set in New York during and immediately after the end of World War II and follows a group of German refugees and political émigrés who managed to escape the clutches of Nazism. The central character is Robert Ross, a former concentration camp inmate and artist who, under a false name, tries to build a new life in the "land of the free", working in an antique shop and trying to understand the true nature of American society.
In contrast to the battlefields of war, Remarque here meticulously dissects the so-called "paradise" - the apparent security and prosperity of New York, which for European exiles turns into a golden cage filled with deep nostalgia, past traumas and a sense of permanent displacement. The characters struggle with the consequences of surviving hell, the guilt of survivors, uncertainty about the fate of their families in Europe and the superficiality of the consumer society that surrounds them. Through a recognizable melancholic style, cynical but deep dialogues and the theme of fragile love with the mysterious Natasha, Remarque writes a moving elegy about the lost homeland, eternal exile and the high price of freedom.
The book consists of two volumes.
