Thomas Mann
Mann

Thomas Mann's *Legends* is a collection of three prose works inspired by myth, religion, and folklore. Through stories of love, identity, laws, and temptations, the author explores the contradictions of human nature.

Legends by the German writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann is a collection of three prose works that weave together mythology, religious tradition, philosophy, and psychological analysis of human nature. The 1958 edition published by Omladina (Belgrade) includes the novella The Transposed Heads, the story The Law, and the novel The Holy Sinner, all translated by Branimir Živojinović.

In the novella The Transposed Heads (Die vertauschten Köpfe, 1940)—inspired by an Indian legend—Mann tells the story of a love triangle and the bizarre swapping of two men's heads. Through irony, humor, and philosophical symbolism, he explores the relationship between body and spirit, as well as themes of love, desire, and personal identity.

The story The Law (Das Gesetz, 1944) offers a distinctive reinterpretation of the biblical tale of Moses and the origin of the Ten Commandments. The author examines the origins of moral norms, the authority of the law, and the conflict between human instincts and social rules, linking ancient tradition with issues relevant to modern civilization.

The novel The Holy Sinner (Der Erwählte, 1951) is based on the medieval legend of Pope Gregory. By tracing a life marked by sin, suffering, and repentance, Mann explores guilt, redemption, fate, and the possibility of spiritual transformation.

The collection is characterized by intellectual depth, refined irony, and the masterful reimagining of traditional tales. Mann transforms ancient myths and legends into modern literary parables about man's contradictory nature, his freedom, and his moral responsibility.
