Treći svezak Sabranih djela sadrži najopsežniju Čehovljevu novelu „Drama u lovu“, te još niz dužih pripovjedaka iz razdoblja 1885-1886. Tu su humoreske poput Šilo u vreći, Eh, ta publika i Mnogo papira, kao i novele poput Uskličnik, Tuga i Anjuta.

„Drama u lovu“ („Drama na ochote“) – prava mala kriminalistička psihološka novela u formi „rukopisa ludaka“. Urednik Kamjšev, bivši istražni sudac i strastveni lovac, priča kako je u provinciji upoznao prekrasnu Olgu, kćer šumara Urbenina. Opsjednut njome, prisiljava je na brak s bogatim, ali dobrim Urbeninom. Olga ga vara s grofom Karnejevim i s njim samim. U ljubomornom deliriju Kamjšev je ubija nožem u šumi tijekom lova. Priča je ispričana s takvim cinizmom i samoopravdanjem da čitatelj ostaje zgrožen licemjerjem „normalnog“ ubojice. Djelo pokazuje Čehova već kao majstora mračnog psihološkog realizma, daleko od ranog humora.
