Die existenzielle Grenzsituation der Hauptfigur ist geprägt von Angst, genau Sartres Metapher des Ekels, der Annäherung an sich selbst und der Entfernung von sich selbst, des hoffnungslosen Godot-Wartens: Mali wartet auf „das Leben, das kommen könnte, wenn ein Tod nicht kommt.“ " kommt. Leben bedeutet für ihn, „sich immer für die härtere Alternative zu entscheiden“. Dieser fieberhafte Dialog mit dem eigenen Gewissen voller verstörender Moral ist der Höhepunkt der kroatischen existentialistischen Prosa.
