Der Gedankengang, der sich durch alle Kapitel zieht, ist bereits im Titel erkennbar. In jedem Kapitel wird die Anwendung psychologischer Erkenntnisse auf soziale Probleme erörtert.

In manchen Fällen sind die Beweise für die Existenz eines bestimmten Nutzens so überzeugend, dass es nicht ratsam wäre, der Gesellschaft zu raten, diesen Nutzen zu ignorieren. In manchen Fällen gibt es eine ausreichende Anzahl von Fällen, aufgrund derer man sagen kann, dass eine bestimmte Methode oder Technik in ihrer jetzigen Form nutzlos ist und entweder verworfen oder bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verbessert werden sollte.
