Prvi svjetski rat i Oktobarska revolucija čine historijski okvir ovoga djela, mada se on proteže i do španjolskog građanskog rata, u kojemu se angažirao i Eric, dosljedan u svom kastinskom neprijateljstvu spram boljševika. I upravo se tu, kao u nekom zatamnjenom ogledalu suvereno kreće središnji lik sa lucidnošću koje Zlo posjeduje. Sofija, opredjeljivši se za drugu stranu, tragično završava svoj život - a konačni udarac koji joj zadaje Eric revolverskim hicem do paroksizma dovodi unutarnju napetost samog djela.
