Prvi svetski rat i Oktobarska revolucija čine istorijski okvir ovog dela, iako se on proteže i na Španski građanski rat, u koji je Erik takođe učestvovao, dosledan u svom „kastinskom neprijateljstvu prema boljševicima“. I upravo tu, kao u zamračenom ogledalu, centralni lik se suvereno kreće lucidnošću koju poseduje Zlo. Sofija, odlučujući se za drugu stranu, tragično završava svoj život - a poslednji udarac koji joj Erik zadaje hicem iz revolvera dovodi unutrašnju napetost dela do paroksizma.
