"The book attempts to explain to the reader the origin, use and purpose of certain terms that are most commonly used in literary theory, to guide him in the purposes, tasks and methods of studying literature and to provide him with some orientation in the different directions of development of contemporary literary science. I have tried to make the choice of problems and the manner of presentation accessible to everyone, regardless of their education and previous knowledge of literary theory, but I have strictly guarded against such simplifications that could call into question the need to always maintain that level of literary science below which, in my opinion, neither current literary criticism, nor literary theory and critical journalism, and least of all the teaching of literature, should go today." - M.
