Sunce u dimu

Sunce u dimu (Sun in the Smoke) is a war novel for children and young adults by Vladimir Čerkez, published in 1958. The plot centers on the 1943 Battle of Sutjeska, one of the most grueling battles of the National Liberation War. Čerkez draws upon historical events and chronology, focusing the narrative on Partisan fighters who, encircled by a numerically and militarily superior enemy, attempt to break through the blockade.

Commander Sava Kovačević holds a prominent place in the novel; he is portrayed as a straightforward, resolute, and exceptionally brave man, ready to share the dangers and hardships faced by his fighters. Alongside him stands the young courier Ranko, through whose eyes the events of the war are presented from a perspective relatable to young readers. His youth stands in stark contrast to the brutality of war—the relentless attacks, injuries, hunger, exhaustion, and death that plagued the Partisan units.

The novel depicts charges, retreats, the transmission of messages and orders, interactions among the fighters, and attempts to breach enemy lines. In doing so, Čerkez goes beyond the military aspects of the battle to emphasize the bonds between the fighters, their self-sacrifice and loyalty, and the individual's willingness to subordinate personal safety to a common goal.

The title Sunce u dimu carries symbolic weight: smoke, fire, and the devastation of war represent suffering and death, while the sun signifies hope, freedom, and life persisting despite the tragedy of war. The novel thus blends a historical backdrop with a story of youth, courage, and humanity amidst extremely difficult circumstances.
