David Herbert Lawrence
Dejvid Herbert Lorens (1885–1930), engleski pisac, rođen je u rudarskom gradu Istvud, Notingemšir. Kao sin rudara i učiteljice, odrastao je u siromašnim uslovima, što je oblikovalo njegove teme o klasnim razlikama, prirodi i seksualnosti. Školovao se u srednjoj školi u Notingemu i na Univerzitetskom koledžu u Notingemu, gde je stekao nastavničku diplomu. Počeo je rano da piše, pod uticajem majke i prijateljice Džesi Čembers. Godine 1911. objavio je svoj prvi roman, „Beli paun“, a 1913. „Sinovi i ljubavnici“, poluautobiografsko delo o njegovom odnosu sa majkom i sukobima u rudarskoj zajednici.
Njegovi romani „Duga“ (1915) i „Zaljubljene žene“ (1920) izazvali su kontroverze zbog eksplicitnog prikaza seksualnosti, a „Ljubavnik ledi Četerli“ (1928) je zabranjen zbog svog erotskog sadržaja. Lorens je istraživao teme modernizma, otuđenja i instinkta, često kritikujući industrijalizaciju. Pored romana, pisao je poeziju („Ljubavne pesme“, 1913), kratke priče („Pruski oficir“, 1914), eseje („Studije klasične američke književnosti“, 1923) i putopise („Sumrak u Italiji“, 1916).
Zbog zdravstvenih problema (tuberkuloza) i sukoba sa cenzurom, proveo je život u egzilu sa suprugom Fridom Vikli, putujući po Evropi, Americi i Australiji. Umro je 1930. godine u Vensu, u Francuskoj. Danas se smatra jednim od ključnih modernističkih pisaca 20. veka, poštovan zbog svojih dubokih uvida u ljudske odnose i prirodu.
