Nekoliko ptica i jedno nebo
This moving historical and spiritual novel intertwines the destinies of Friar Didak Buntić—who saves starving children during World War I—and a young man from the 1980s in search of meaning and faith.
The novel A Few Birds and One Sky (Nekoliko ptica i jedno nebo) by the prominent Croatian writer Miro Gavran, published in 2016, is a compelling narrative work that links different historical eras and destinies through two parallel storylines. One narrative thread is set during World War I and follows the renowned, heroic feat of the Herzegovinian Franciscan Friar Didak Buntić, who organized the rescue of thousands of starving children from drought-stricken Herzegovina, relocating them to fertile Slavonia. The second storyline unfolds in the 1980s across Zagreb and Bosnia and Herzegovina, following a young protagonist navigating personal crises, a search for identity, and spiritual questioning, while gradually uncovering the invisible threads connecting his life to events from the past. Gavran masterfully intertwines these two stories, creating a powerful allegory about human kindness, self-sacrifice, faith, and love that transcend time. Through a narrative style that is simple yet emotionally profound and accessible, the novel explores themes of mercy, family roots, and divine providence. A Few Birds and One Sky serves simultaneously as a historical tribute to forgotten figures of greatness and as a universal story about hope and finding meaning in difficult times.
