The most famous and beloved stories:

  • "The Golden Egg" (title fairy tale, Slovak folk tale) – a poor boy finds a magical golden egg that fulfills only noble desires. When greed blinds him, the egg disappears; his search leads him to an old wizard who reveals that real gold is in the heart and good deeds.
  • "Little Red Riding Hood" (Brothers Grimm) – a girl in a red cloak encounters a cunning wolf, but with wisdom and the help of a woodcutter, she overcomes danger.
  • "Sleeping Beauty" (Brothers Grimm) – a princess cursed by a spindle sleeps for a hundred years until the prince's true love awakens her.
  • "The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats" (Brothers Grimm) – an evil wolf tries to trick the little goats, but the youngest saves them, and the wolf ends up with a belly full of stones in a well.
  • "The Mouse That Ate Cats" (Czech folktale) – a brave little mouse bites cats' tails at night and becomes the hero of all mice; a fairy tale full of laughter and twists.

Other precious stories in the collection are "Ivica Trupko", "The Unusual Nightingale", "Sunflower", "The Turtle and the Bitch", "The Stolen Lullaby", "The Cuckoo and the Watchmaker", "The Brave Ants" and many others – a total of 25 fairy tales that have marked the childhood of generations.

The illustrations by Marian Čipka in color and black and white are full of magical details and tenderness. The book is still a classic of Croatian childhood today, and the title "The Golden Egg" has become synonymous with the pure, noble magic of fairy tales.
