Ernest Hemingway

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a passionate and profound recollection of the pride and tragedy of the civil war that tore Spain apart.

The novel is set in Spain, high in the pine forests of the Sierra. The main character, Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer, is sent to carry out the task of blowing up a bridge of vital importance. There he learns about the dangerous relationships between his war comrades and meets Maria, a young woman who escaped from Franco's coup plotters. The novel explores the themes of love, death, duty and freedom of the spiritual life. Pope Leo XIII blessed this novel, and its message of grace and redemption has great power.
