Zmaj od Bosne: Pripovijest iz novije bosanske povijesti

Josip Eugen Tomić

The Dragon of Bosnia is a historical novel by Josip Eugen Tomić, published in 1879, depicting the struggle of Captain Husein Gradaščević for the autonomy of Bosnia within the Ottoman Empire during the 1830s.

Gradaščević, known as the "Dragon of Bosnia", leads a rebellion of the Bosnian beys against the sultan's reforms that threatened to abolish the traditional rights and privileges of the local aristocracy.

The novel describes in detail the political and military events of the period, including the siege of Travnik in 1831, where Gradaščević's forces manage to capture the city and force the vizier Namik-paša to recognize Bosnian autonomy. However, despite initial successes, the rebellion is ultimately suppressed due to internal divisions among the beys and a lack of support from outside Bosnia.

In addition to political events, the novel also contains a love story between Gradaščević and a Christian girl, Marija, symbolizing the possibility of coexistence and understanding between different peoples and religions. Tomic's writing style combines realistic descriptions with romantic elements, making the novel accessible to a wide readership.
