The Secret of the Green Bird (1910) is a novel by Spanish writer and Jesuit Luis Coloma, an author also known for the story of Ratoncito Pérez, about a young man from a Spanish aristocratic family who grew up without a mother under the influence of a domi
The novel follows the life of a young nobleman Boy, son of the Duke of Yecla. After his mother's death, the boy grows up under the strict supervision of his stepmother Rita, an ambitious and manipulative woman who dominates the family. Boy is a sensitive, idealistic young man who struggles between the expectations of high society, his own feelings, and his need for true love and freedom.
Coloma masterfully depicts the contrasts between the splendor of aristocratic life and the inner emptiness, hypocrisy, and moral weaknesses of high society. The novel is rich in psychological insights, subtle irony, and a Catholic worldview—typical of Coloma's style. The "green bird" as a symbol of mystery, hope, and unattainable happiness is particularly impressive.
The work belongs to the tradition of Spanish realism with a moral and educational emphasis. Readers appreciate it for its fine characterization of characters, elegant style, and critical depiction of high society at the beginning of the 20th century.
The Secret of the Green Bird is a classic, somewhat forgotten pearl of Spanish literature – ideal for fans of psychological novels, coming-of-age stories, and works with strong moral and social messages.
