U klancu

U klancu

Ivan Cankar

The novel follows the tragic fate of Francka, a mother who—through hard labor and sacrifice in a poverty-stricken gorge—struggles in vain to secure a better future for her children, illustrating social decline and a lack of prospects.

In the Gorge (Na klancu, 1902) is one of the most significant works by the Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar and a prime example of Slovenian Modernism. The novel tells a harrowing story of poverty, social injustice, and unwavering maternal love. Set on the impoverished outskirts of town—in the "gorge"—the narrative focuses on the life of Francka, a resilient and spirited woman. Her life is marked by setbacks, suffering, and a ceaseless struggle for her family's survival after her husband, Lojze the tailor, abandons her to destitution. Through the character of Francka, Cankar creates a universal symbol of the suffering endured by the Slovenian people and the working class in the early 20th century. She pins her greatest hopes on her son, Lojzek, believing that education will allow him to break free from the shackles of the gorge and build a better life. However, the novel’s tragic insight lies in the fact that the gorge is more than just a physical location; it is a symbolic trap and a vicious circle from which escape is incredibly difficult. Alongside a strong social message, Cankar blends naturalistic depictions of squalor with symbolic and psychological elements, crafting a poignant, dark portrait of ceaseless human sacrifice and unfulfilled dreams.
