Danas 1934 I-II: Reprint izdanje u dva toma biblioteke Liber Croaticus

Miroslav Krleža, Milan Bogdanović

The reprint edition of Danas 1934 I–II brings together all five issues of this cult magazine. Danas was a key forum of modern culture, bringing together surrealists, writers, and artists until its ban, leaving a lasting mark on literary history.

The reprint of the Danas 1934 I–II edition within the Liber Croaticus library makes one of the most important and controversial cultural publications of the interwar Yugoslavia available again. The magazine Danas, edited in 1934 by the duo Miroslav Krleža and Milan Bogdanović, was published in only five issues before it was banned for its political and cultural provocation. It is precisely this short life, combined with an exceptional level of intellectual energy, that has made it a legendary place of modernist thought.

The collection brings integral facsimiles of the original editions, allowing the reader an authentic insight into the graphic identity, editorial concept and intellectual framework in which the magazine was created. Danas was conceived as a space of resistance to spiritual closure and provincialism: open to European modern trends, but at the same time anchored in critical reflection on domestic culture, politics and the social situation.

Among the contributors are leading figures of surrealism – Marko Ristić, Vane Živadinović Bor and Koča Popović – whose texts brought poetic subversion and political sharpness. They were also joined by prominent Croatian and Yugoslav intellectuals: Krsto Hegedušić, whose visual work follows the social tensions of the era; August Cesarec, the voice of workers' literature; Branko Gavella, who introduced contemporary theatre to the magazine; and Veselin Masleša, one of the most prominent political and cultural essayists of his time.

The topics covered by the magazine range from literary criticism, political analysis and art contributions to polemical texts exposing authoritarianism, censorship and social injustice. In this context, Krleža's role stands out in particular: his style and thematic interests give the tone of the magazine intellectual sharpness, worldview clarity and moral passion.

The reprint edition thus becomes more than a historical document: it brings back into circulation the space in which the modernist and avant-garde thought of the region was shaped, and reaffirms Danas as an indispensable place for understanding the cultural history of the 20th century.
