Suplementi u prehrani i športu : dodaci koji život znače

Ignac Kulier

A book by a famous Croatian nutritionist and sports nutrition specialist. Each supplement has been reviewed through his research, and references are included in the text. From this, any educated reader can easily understand what is good and what is not.

The expectation that a supplement is a medicine and has immediate effects is a very common misconception. But the fact remains that supplements contain active substances that can significantly help. As a rule, the effects of supplements are not visible, but can (or do not have to) be felt. Unfortunately, like all other things, supplements can be falsified, mislabeled, faked, but that's another story. The strength of a supplement is measured by the type and amount of active substance in it! Enriched yeast is the basic raw material for selenium, but the final value of the finished preparation is measured by the amount of selenium in one tablet (50 or 100 /ug). St. John's wort-based "good mood" tablets are measured by the content of the active substance complex (hypericin). It is true that there is big business around supplements, and it is also true that by taking supplements as "self-protection", people avoid going to the doctor's office. According to the Nutrition Business Journal, which published data from an independent study in San Diego, California, in 1999, Americans spent $6 billion on supplements in 1996! The same experts predicted $14 billion by the end of 1999! According to their assessment, weight loss supplements and antioxidants fared best, with about 60% of all American adults using one of the numerous products from these groups.
