Sven Delblanc, a Swedish novelist, dramatist and literary historian (assistant professor at the University of Uppsala) is the winner of prestigious awards for literature, and this novel was awarded to him in 1964.

Mantija (or Under the priest's mantle) belongs to the type of historical novel. Two unusual companions, a runaway priest and a giant whose appearance "attracts both men and women equally", in Prussia in 1784, flee from a cruel master in order to enjoy the fruits of freedom. In a series of adventures and love affairs, they end up in the German army and Frederick the Great himself, the writer and intellectual ruler, who presents them with his principles of rule and his bitter philosophy of life.
