Roman “Igra staklenim perlama” objavljen 1943. godine, najveće je, gotovo pa životno djelo Hermanna Hessea koje je pisao gotovo 12 godina.

Smatra se da je Hesse ponajviše zbog njega zaslužio Nobelovu nagradu, koja mu je dodijeljena 1946. godine. Radnja romana odvija se u budućnosti, moguće 25. stoljeću, u fiktivnoj državi Kastaliji. Tom državom upravlja intelektualna elita, postavljena i na čelo obrazovnog sustava. U školama se podučavaju nadareni učenici, a već i sam pristup školovanju, koje pripada samo najdarovitijima, smatra se čašću. Ako netko ne uspije završiti školu, biva izopćen iz društva. U školama se najviše uče umjetnički i humanistički predmeti, a pored njih, najvažniji dio obrazovanja upravo je Igra staklenim biserima.
