Sretni Martin / Martin im Glück

Tomo Živko

Martin's life story depicts the fate of the Danube Swabians in Slavonia. Through personal family memories, life's trials and historical changes, the novel bears witness to identity, homeland and the strength of man.

Happy Martin / Martin im Glück is the literary debut of Toma Živko, published as a bilingual Croatian-German edition. The work is designed as a homeland novel composed of interconnected stories that follow the life of Martin and the people from his environment. Through their personal destinies, the author presents a picture of the life of the German community in Slavonia, its customs, language and cultural heritage, creating at the same time an intimate family story and testimony of a time.

The plot covers periods marked by major social and political changes that deeply affect the everyday lives of ordinary people. Martin grows up in an environment where members of different nations and cultures live together, but wars, border changes and post-war circumstances bring insecurity, separation and loss of home. Through his memories and experiences, the reader learns about the complex history of the Danube Swabians, but without an emphasized ideological perspective – the person, family and community are always at the center.

The author pays special attention to the themes of identity, belonging and the preservation of cultural heritage. Martin is not portrayed as an exceptional hero, but as an ordinary man whose life reflects the experiences of many members of the German minority in Croatia. His personal story shows how dignity, solidarity and devotion to the homeland can be preserved even in the most difficult circumstances.

The bilingual text in Croatian and German gives the book additional educational and cultural value. In addition to enabling parallel reading and language learning, it contributes to the preservation of the linguistic heritage of the Danube Swabians and brings their history and culture closer to a wider circle of readers. Due to the combination of literary narrative, autobiographical elements and historical context, Sretni Martin / Martin im Glück represents a valuable work of homeland and minority literature that preserves the memory of the life of a community and its contribution to Croatian cultural heritage.
