Knjiga Josipa Vončine raščlanjuje originalne tekstove iz hrvatske književnosti od kraja 15. do početka 19. stoljeća. Autor je odabrao 123 karakteristična primjera iz starije hrvatske beletrističke, memoarske i jezikoslovne djelatnosti te opredijelivši se za tekstološki pristup, sintetizirao književnopovijesne i jezičnopovijesne elemente. Oko svakog teksta autor je izgradio cjelovitu jedinicu koja sadrži potrebne informacije o dijalektu i doprinosu pisca jezičnom razvoju. Kod beletrističkih djela date su upute za stilističku interpretaciju.
