Naglasak romana je ponajprije na obiteljskom ozračju u kojem odrasta, a ono je obilježeno bračnim neslaganjima oca i majke – otac je pijanac i neostvarena umjetnička duša, a majka škrtica kojoj je imetak važniji od obitelji. Takvo neposredno okruženje oblikovat će lik Eugenea Ganta – sanjara s umjetničkim sklonostima poput oca, punog emocionalne energije, ambicije, gladnog iskustva, osjetljivog, strastvenog, čistog… Ovaj Wolfeov roman prvijenac, naglašene autobiografske potke, postigao je golem uspjeh u Americi neposredno po objavljivanju.
