Raincoat is an anthology novel by Gogol.

The main character, Akakija Akakievich Bašmačkin, is a poor official who barely collected money for a new raincoat. As soon as he had acquired it, it was stolen from him by street robbers, after which Bašmačkin died. A raincoat, like a wife or a lover, gives new meaning to his life, while theft and futile appeals to authorities completely destroy him.
