Suzana: roman iz Kristova doba

M. Reynes‑monlaur

A religious novel set during the time of Christ's life. It follows Susanna, a girl of pure soul, who experiences a spiritual transformation in her encounter with Jesus and relives His teachings, miracles, passion, and resurrection in her heart.

Suzana M. Reynes-Monlaur (pseudonym of the French Catholic writer Mile Reynes) is a novel of distinct religious sensitivity and lyrical power. It was written with the intention, as the author writes in the French introduction, to bring closer the time of Jesus and the experience of the people who saw, listened to and followed him “more faithfully than any legend”. For the novel, the author studied the French, English and historically most reliable sources on the life of Christ, Jewish customs and Palestine, trying to create a spiritually credible picture of the time of Jesus.

The main character, Suzana, is a young, pure and sensitive soul, an almost idealized girl who opens herself completely to the presence of Christ. Her love and faith are not romantic, but spiritual: she experiences within herself everything she has seen and heard – Christ’s words, miracles, teachings, goodness and the power of His appearance. Susanna is depicted as a being who lives in the “crystal mirror” of gospel truth, and Christ’s death, glory, and resurrection resonate in her heart as a personal spiritual experience.

The novel is emphatically poetic, as the afterword emphasizes: “pure poetry, interwoven with finesse, grace, and sweet simplicity.” It is prose that creates atmosphere more than action, and it depicts the world of Jesus’ time with gentle mysticism. The scenes of Christ’s miracles, the speech on the Lake of Galilee, the walk toward Calvary, and the moments of the Easter mystery are depicted through Susanna’s gaze—humble, amazed, and completely surrendered.

The afterword compares the novel to the works of “primitive painters”—it is simple but sincere, full of enthusiasm and spiritual fervor. Reynes-Monlaur, who otherwise wrote historical and religious novels, combines documentary precision with powerful emotional imagery in Susanna. Due to its purity, youthful enthusiasm, and deeply Christian tone, the novel gained great popularity upon its publication and was eagerly read, especially among female readers, as Suzana is portrayed as the ideal of a young soul who lives by faith and love for Christ.
