Mali rječnik hrvatskoga i njemačkoga jezika: I. Njemačko-hrvatski dio

Ivan Filipović

The Small German-Croatian Dictionary by Ivan Filipović is a classic work of Croatian lexicography of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This edition is aligned with the then current, officially accepted Broz–Boranić orthography.

The dictionary was intended for a wide range of users – students, clerks, merchants and all those who are in daily contact with the German language, dominant in the administration, education and economy of Croatia in the Austro-Hungarian period. It contains tens of thousands of German words and expressions with precise Croatian translations, phraseology and practical examples.

Filipović's work is distinguished by its systematicity, clarity and practicality. As a prominent pedagogue and lexicographer, the author enriched the Croatian vocabulary with terms from law, trade, technology and everyday life, harmonizing it with the new spelling. This edition is an important witness to the standardization of the Croatian language and the strengthening of its position within the Monarchy.

Today it represents a valuable historical source for studying the development of Croatian orthography, lexicon and Croatian-German language ties. The antiquarian edition is sought after among philologists, language historians and collectors.
