Nebo gori

Jan Parandowski

Nebo gori is a novel about the growing up of high school student Teofil Grodzicki who, through doubts, internal conflicts and questioning of faith, searches for his own view of the world on the eve of the First World War.

The sky is burning by Jan Parandowski is a novel about growing up and spiritual maturation set in Lviv at the beginning of the 20th century, just before the First World War. The main character is high school student Teofil Grodzicki, an intelligent and sensitive young man who is in a period of intense questioning of himself, the world and religion. Brought up in a traditional Catholic family, he gradually begins to doubt the truths he had unreservedly accepted until then. His inner struggle between religious upbringing, scientific knowledge, philosophical questions and personal experiences forms the center of the novel.

Teofilo's maturation takes place through schooling, friendships, first loves and encounters with people of different beliefs. All of this encourages him to reject predetermined answers and independently shape his own outlook on life. Parandowski portrays with great psychological persuasiveness the restlessness of youth, the feeling of loneliness and the need for the truth, without offering simple solutions or final answers.

Although the novel is often associated with the author's experiences, Parandowski emphasized that it is not an autobiography, but a literary story that uses elements of personal experience. The sky is burning is considered one of the most important Polish novels about growing up and the spiritual crisis of a young man, and a work that encourages thinking about freedom of thought, religion and human identity.
