Unterstadt

Ivana Šojat-Kuči

The cult novel by Ivana Šojat Unterstadt is one of those books that does not allow the reader to stop because it completely draws him into the story and gives him the opportunity to identify with the main characters.

This is a novel about Osijek, about a bourgeois family with German roots, about the twentieth century, historical turbulence, changes, justice and injustice, wars, death, fear, love and joy. The fate of a family, a city and a country is told through the lives of four generations of women who endure history and protect the future while their men fight their futile battles and lost wars in advance. The world of Unterstadt, full of emotions, twists, liveliness, nuances, virtues and flaws of the main and secondary characters hero, is universal and touches almost every family history in these parts. Ivana Šojat created the most important Osijek novel, a novel that is a dedication to the city and to the desire not to forget history, not to hide in the closet or under the carpet as her heroines do out of fear and shame, because the shadow of the past looms over everyone who he did not face it. Unterstadt was awarded the Vladimir Nazor 2009, Ksaver Šandor Gjalski 2010, Fran Galović 2010 and Josip i Ivan awards. Kozarac in 2010 and staged in the most successful and award-winning play of Croatian theater in the twenty-first century.
