Henry Miller: Odabrana djela

Henry Miller: Odabrana djela

Henry Miller (New York, 1891 – Pacific Palisades, California, 1980) published several essays and short stories in American magazines by the age of thirty. He started writing seriously at the age of almost forty. His novels, especially Tropic of Cancer (1934), caused a lot of controversy and even bans in America (the novels Black spring (1936) and Tropic of Capricorn (1936) were banned in the USA for almost thirty years, which made the author secured an "underground" reputation) and trials (so in 1964 the US Supreme Court dismissed the State Court's obscenity charges, which turned into a major event of the sexual revolution). Henry Miller's work, almost entirely autobiographical in nature, greatly influenced the writers of the beat generation. Miller was both a force and a value and a literary sage who nevertheless did not fit in with his time. Moreover, he is hardly an American writer, although no one can be more "American" than him. And therefore it has always eluded any literary classification. The following Miller's works have been translated into Croatian so far: Rakov obratnica, Mirni dani na Clichi, Black spring, Capricorn obratnica, Colossus from Maroussi, Pink crucifix: Sexus, Nexus, Plexus, Books of my life, The wisdom of the heart, My dear Brenda...
Although with some of his works, such as the travel prose The Colossus of Maroussi and The Air-Conditioned Nightmare, he lived up to American criticism, having written calm and gentle books without vulgarity, American criticism disparaged him throughout his life and showed a kind of indifference. Returning to America after his trip to Greece, he began work on the trilogy The Rosy Crucifixion, which will sublimate all his rebellion against the stubborn and hypocritical America in a lesser intensity than, for example, Tropic of Cancer. After his works became more widely available in the 1960s, he achieved mass readership, directly influencing the popularization of Halil Džubran, Herman Hesse and decisively marking the poetics of authors such as Norman Mailer, Jack Kerouac and others. Numerous later novels, travel meditations, autobiographical and essayistic improvisations, correspondence with L. Durrell and Anais Nin, etc., inherited the formal and thematic achievements of the former. The entire work of Henry Miller had a strong resonance not only in America but also in the whole world.
