Sporazum Cvetković - Maček

Ljubo Boban

In the book Sporazum Cvetković-Maček, Ljubo Boban shows the virtues that graced him as a historian: work on finding new sources, their uncompromising analysis, and their use in a scientific text that questions earlier positions.

Ljubo Boban discovered many new documents, previously unknown to the general public and unused in historiography. One of the dissertation evaluators, Vaso Bogdanov, asked Boban to remove from the dissertation some claims that he considered to be disputed, and Jaroslav Šidak and Mirjana Gross suggested that Boban revise his claims about Maček's Greater Croatia and replace it with "another, more correct term ". Boban listened to the advice of his professors and omitted the claims about the "Greater Croatian character" of Maček's policy at the time of the agreement, so he replaced the terms "Greater Croatian ambitions" or "Greater Croatian program" with "territorial demands" or "territorial program". The second polemic occurred after Franjo Tuđman received his doctorate in 1965 at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar, defending his dissertation, Causes of the Crisis of Monarchist Yugoslavia from the Unification in 1918 to the Collapse in 1941. Ljubo Boban made serious accusations in Telegram that Tuđman had plagiarized him, especially in parts of his manuscript where he explains the origin of the Cvetković-Maček Agreement and Banovina Hrvatska. Tuđman's mentor Vaso Bogdanov, who had a copy of Boban's still unpublished dissertation on the Cvetković-Maček Agreement, joined the controversy. It was obvious that Tuđman obtained Boban's manuscript without authorization and that he used it excessively.
